The Background

Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Havant, Hampshire, on the United Kingdom’s south coast, Apollo Fire Detectors manufactures and distributes fire detection solutions for customers all over the world. The manufacturer has 3,000 products in over 100 global markets, including wireless fire systems and detection devices for a broad range of different environments. Some of the company’s most widely used fire detectors include the Soteria, Discovery, and XP95 range detectors, high-performance systems that enable improved customization and draw on multi-sensing capabilities to reduce false alarms.

Apollo Fire Detectors has been recognized by the UK government with the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement for three consecutive years, the first company to earn the accolade three successive times. In addition, in August 2025 Apollo earned a platinum EcoVadis Rating, positioning the company within the top 1% of all organisations evaluated by EcoVadis. Apollo is part of Halma, a global conglomerate of life-saving technology companies that also includes Advanced, Ampac, and Orama.

The Challenge

After Brexit, the UK exited many of the key environmental regulations maintained by the European Union, opting to develop and implement their own versions of directives like the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH). These new regulations represented a challenge for Apollo, adding an additional layer of complexity to the manufacturer’s compliance responsibilities.

At the same time that the UK was creating its own versions of existing EU environmental laws, new regulations like Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR) were taking shape and entering into force in the country. Collectively, all the emerging requirements were contributing to a denser, more demanding regulatory landscape. As it grappled with its new compliance responsibilities, Apollo knew it would have to strengthen its existing processes if it wanted to remain a model firm in the regulatory space.

Compliance specialist Egle Siusiene led Apollo’s response to the growing regulatory challenges. With extensive experience managing product-level and material compliance regulations, she expected the transition to the new legislation in the UK to be relatively straightforward. But the evolving requirements were more difficult than Egle or her team anticipated. Rather than signalling a setback, however, she saw the regulatory demands as a strategic opportunity for Apollo to evolve its data environment and position the business for long‑term compliance success.

At the time of the transition, Apollo used a manual process to gather critical compliance documentation. Though well-established at the company, this method was time-consuming. “It was a lot of spreadsheets and a lot of sending out emails,” Egle said.

Because critical information was distributed across multiple documents, spreadsheets, and internal systems, compliance activities became increasingly long and time-intensive. For Egle and Apollo, it was a clear sign that the company needed to use this challenge as a springboard to strengthen its efficiency. One potential way to do that was by introducing a platform that would support the expanding regulatory environment they were now facing. Without such a tool, it would become increasingly difficult to prevent delays, inefficiencies, and risks of falling into noncompliance. “It was unsustainable,” she said. “We definitely needed a centralized database.”

Solution

After weeks of navigating fragmented, manual processes, Egle saw the need for a centralized compliance solution. “We decided to move forward with a software solution because of the increasing complexity of material compliance legislation, and because our data was spread across different internal systems,” she said. “Our main goals were to clean up our data and strengthen our understanding of material compliance across all the relevant legislation for the fire industry.”

Egle explored several compliance tools over the course of Apollo’s software search. When they opted into a free trial for Z2Data’s Compliance Manager solution, two critical characteristics quickly stood out. First, the responsiveness of the support team; and second, the simplicity and intuitiveness of the platform’s interface.

“The support team was incredibly responsive to any of the questions we had, which made a big difference,” she said. Z2Data’s solution also delivered the best user experience they’d seen in all the tools they tried. “Without the team at Z2Data even explaining what to click, the dashboard was very clear,” she said. “It’s just a very intuitive platform—you can change, edit, without any bugs, delays, or other issues.”

Before the free trial had even ended, Egle was confident Z2Data could address Apollo’s compliance challenges. Just as important, having direct access to both a supply chain risk management (SCRM) platform and an engaged support team gave Apollo a scalable foundation to maintain compliance over the long term while also supporting its export operations.

Result

Since onboarding Z2Data’s Compliance Manager, Egle has implemented several changes to strengthen Apollo’s compliance readiness and streamline day-to-day operations.

First, Egle was able to successfully free up much of her and the supplier quality team’s capacity. Previously, much of their time was spent carrying out manual due diligence and supplier verification. Z2Data’s Compliance Manager now automates much of this work, however, allowing the team to tackle more strategic challenges. “It was a game-changer for us, because it freed up our supplier quality team and myself from the manual checking, validation, data-gathering, and other time-consuming work,” Egle said.

Prior to implementing Z2Data, Egle could spend up to a week verifying product material compliance for specific regulations—a clear sign that she needed a faster, more automated approach. Today, Compliance Manager handles data collection, analysis, and compliance determinations across multiple regulations much more efficiently. “With Z2Data, the time-saving is just incredible for our whole product portfolio,” she said. “It’s priceless.”

Second, Z2Data’s extensive compliance data allowed Apollo to take a more forward-looking approach to regulatory planning. The team can now not only identify which electronic components may be impacted by new and emerging regulations, but also proactively search for compliant alternatives. “We really did not have good visibility into which components would be affected,” she said. “But now we have a clear process in place through Z2Data.” As a result, Apollo can proactively embed compliance considerations at the earliest stages of product design, supporting the long-term success of their fire detector systems. “The data platform has really helped future-proof us.”

Since onboarding Z2Data, Apollo has strengthened its due diligence and procurement processes, while setting a higher standard for traceability and transparency across its supply chain. “Z2Data has changed how we work, and it’s streamlined everything, process-wise,” she said.
