I've found the comparison tool within Z2 to be very helpful. If I'm looking for a replacement part for an existing design, I can line up however many alternates I want to look at and look at the specs line by line and see where things are the same and see where things are different.
A real alternate has to clear package, electrical ratings, temp grade, compliance, lifecycle, and live inventory. Reconciling all of that by hand runs hours per part, and a "match" that is itself obsolete or noncompliant just re-creates the problem.
